Meet the Moviemaker in Milan

The Biblical scene of Leonardo’s “Last Supper” will enter the digital age thanks to live projections of images and light bouncing off of every painted surface, as well as a soundscape of voices, music and noises, all of which have been conceived by artist/film director Peter Greenaway (above, right).

The performance will take place in the Dominican Friary in Santa Maria delle Grazie Church on the wall of the refectory where Leonardo portrayed the moment when Christ announces that one of his apostles will betray him. The audience will take turns viewing the event in groups of twenty-five due to the fragile conditions of the painting.

To see just how keen Greenaway’s sense of aesthetics is, watch “The Pillow Book,” his 1997 film of heartbreak and revenge, and tell me you don’t lust after Nagiko’s apartment.
