Quote from Dutch Door, Unique and Classic Looking Type of Door :
Have you ever heard of the so called Dutch door type? Do you have any idea about this door type? Well, this particular type of door has its different names in other term. In British English it is called as a stable door while in Hiberno English it is known as half door. The name of this door in Hiberno English implies its shape which is actually divided into two parts horizontally. Back in the early times in New England this type of door is called as double-hung door. So, now you get the idea of this door type already?
Back then the main purpose of this doo was to keep animals away outside a farmhouse, keep the children inside while at the same time let the air to circulate through the top section of the door. Basically you can open either the upper door or the lower door only depending on our purpose to open the door itself. Meanwhile the origin of its name Dutch was derived from the fact that it was highly popular in Netherlands during the period of 17th century. This type of door was also popular in several paintings originated from the Dutch.
At first this type of door was used in North-American passenger type of train cars. The purpose was to allow the crewmen of the train cars to interact with others safely and also to simply inspect the train itself. Yet the use of this type of door is getting more and more obsolete as the rules have changed regarding the passenger train cars.
So, if you want to create a unique appeal in your house, you can clearly consider the use of this type of door in certain areas or building. You may actually use this type of door as an entrance to your house as long as you consider the use of another door. It means that you have to consider using double-door. Otherwise you can simply do a bit of experiment in using this door in certain sections of your house.
In term of the construction of this door type, you will find it in two independent door sections that could be moved freely without any attachment into the other half. There should be 4 hinges with 2 hinges on each part. There will be lock and doorknob on the bottom part and a latch will be placed on the top upper part. Today you can still clearly get this so called Dutch door for your house.
